Here’s how veterans can take charge of their financial journey.
Overview of Investing VA Disability Money
Veterans receiving VA disability payments often wonder how best to utilize this income to build long-term financial security. Combining insights from Investor.gov and National Invest In Veterans Week® (NIVW), this guide provides strategies for investing disability benefits wisely, including using tools like investment calculators, Roth IRAs, and other financial planning resources.
1. Can I Invest My VA Disability Money?
Yes, VA disability payments can be invested to grow wealth over time. These payments are tax-free, making them an excellent resource for savings and investments. Key steps include:
Set Financial Goals: Use tools like the Savings Goal Calculator to determine monthly contributions needed to achieve specific goals.
Prioritize Retirement Accounts: Consider contributing to tax-advantaged accounts like a Roth IRA or TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) to maximize long-term growth.
Diversify Investments: Allocate funds into a mix of index funds, ETFs, and mutual funds to balance risk and reward.
2. How to Invest VA Disability Money (Reddit Tips and Beyond)
Platforms like Reddit often discuss ideas for investing VA disability benefits. While personal advice is helpful, veterans should rely on trusted resources like Investor.gov and National Invest In Veterans Week® for verified guidance:
Avoid High-Interest Debt: Pay off credit cards and loans with high-interest rates before investing.
Start Small: Even a small percentage of disability benefits invested monthly can grow substantially over time due to compound interest. Use the Compound Interest Calculator to estimate growth.
Educate Yourself: Attend events like Veteran Tech Tuesday during NIVW to learn how technology can enhance financial management.
3. Using a Roth IRA with VA Disability Benefits
A Roth IRA is an excellent option for veterans receiving VA disability benefits because it offers tax-free growth and withdrawals:
Eligibility: VA disability benefits do not count as earned income for Roth IRA contributions. However, if you have additional earned income, you can contribute up to the annual limit.
Benefits: Roth IRAs allow tax-free withdrawals in retirement, making them an ideal choice for long-term savings.
Maximize Contributions: Combine VA disability benefits with earned income to contribute the full amount. Use tools like the Investment Calculator to project growth.
4. How to Use an Investment Calculator
An investment calculator is a valuable tool for veterans to estimate how their disability benefits can grow over time:
Input Monthly Contributions: Calculate how much to save from your benefits each month.

Investing in Yourself: The Cornerstone of Financial Success
Educational Empowerment with the GI Bill
Education is one of the most valuable investments veterans and seniors can make in themselves. Through the GI Bill, veterans have access to 36 months of full in-state tuition coverage, allowing them to pursue new careers after military service. For those who’ve already achieved educational goals, these benefits are transferrable to family members, adding further value.

Understanding Your State’s Financial Advantages
Veterans can capitalize on their unique legal residency benefits, which allow them to maintain a tax-friendly home state despite frequent relocations. Similarly, seniors can benefit by strategically relocating to states with no income tax or lower tax rates to maximize their savings. NIVW emphasizes financial literacy programs and mentorship to help veterans and seniors navigate these benefits effectively.
Explore state-specific opportunities through platforms like FloridaVeterans.com and TennesseeVeterans.com.
Debt Avoidance: Financial Freedom Starts with Control
Veterans often face unique financial stressors, from frequent relocations to adapting to civilian careers. Programs like the Service Member’s Civil Relief Act and the Veteran’s Administration (VA) home loan program offer critical safeguards, such as capped loan interest rates and competitive mortgage terms. NIVW provides workshops and mentorship to educate veterans and seniors on leveraging these benefits responsibly.

With NVSBW’s 2024 theme, "Strengthening #VetBiz Communities," focusing on the role of veteran-owned businesses in local economies, NIVW takes this concept further by fostering a global ecosystem of veteran entrepreneurs through strategic initiatives, legislative advocacy, and cutting-edge technology.

From Celebration to Transformation: Why NIVW Stands Out
1. Global Reach vs. Local Events
NVSBW focuses on nationwide SBA events that connect veterans to resources like VBOCs and funding programs. While helpful, these are often limited to one week and depend on regional partnerships.
In contrast, NIVW extends across 62 global markets, leveraging hyper-localized domains like FloridaVeterans.com and GermanyVeterans.com to provide year-round support. This international reach ensures that veteran entrepreneurs can access resources tailored to their local and global needs, fostering opportunities in diverse industries such as technology, green energy, and logistics.
2. Comprehensive Legislative Advocacy
NVSBW emphasizes SBA-backed resources such as 7(a) loans, VetCert, and federal contracting certifications like SDVOSB. These tools are essential but insufficient to address the larger structural challenges facing veteran entrepreneurs.
NIVW goes further by championing legislative efforts like the Invest in Veterans Stimulus Act, which proposes:
Startup Tax Credits to offset initial business costs.
Low-Interest Loans to make capital more accessible.
Streamlined Federal Contracting to simplify the process for securing government contracts.
Learn more about these initiatives at Championing the Complete the Mission Act of 2024.
FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠: Targeted Support for Women Veterans
One of NIVW’s standout features is its dedication to underserved veteran groups, particularly women veterans. Through programs like FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠, NIVW empowers female entrepreneurs with tools such as:
Funding Education to overcome systemic biases in capital access.
Leadership Training to enhance their impact in business and community roles.
Tailored Mentorship for scalable and sustainable growth.
NVSBW provides general resources for women through programs like the Women Veteran Entrepreneurship Training Program, but NIVW’s year-round approach ensures a more sustained impact.
Economic and Social Impact: A Broader Vision
Economic Growth
While NVSBW focuses on immediate resources for individual businesses, NIVW drives systemic change by fostering collaborative networks and international opportunities. Veteran-owned businesses already contribute over $1.2 trillion annually to the U.S. economy; NIVW’s global model has the potential to scale this impact exponentially.
Social Empowerment
NIVW recognizes that veteran entrepreneurship is not just about profit—it’s about creating jobs, fostering innovation, and giving back to communities. By promoting initiatives like Kevin D. Shoun’s transformational leadership (read more here), NIVW builds a culture of resilience and community-driven success.

Introduction
Female veteran entrepreneurs represent an essential yet often overlooked demographic within the entrepreneurial community. Yet, they face unique systemic challenges, including barriers to capital, inadequate mentorship networks, and difficulty accessing government resources.
National Invest In Veterans Week® (NIVW), under the visionary leadership of Angel Shuford, Vice President & CFO, has been instrumental in addressing these issues. Initiatives like FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠ provide tailored support for female veterans at all stages of their entrepreneurial journey. Legislators now have the opportunity to build on this momentum by supporting transformative solutions, such as the proposed Invest in Veterans Stimulus Act.
The Challenge: Systemic Barriers for Female Veteran Entrepreneurs
Access to Capital
Surveys conducted during the Jacksonville Vetrepreneur Summits revealed that over 67% of veteran entrepreneurs identify a lack of funding as their primary barrier to success. Female veterans face even greater difficulties securing loans or venture capital due to biases and systemic inequities in the financial system.
Mentorship and Networking
Despite their strong leadership skills, female veterans frequently lack access to structured mentorship programs and networks of experienced entrepreneurs. The 2018 Jacksonville Summit showed that while 56% of veteran entrepreneurs attended business events, most lacked access to sustainable mentorship and collaborative networks.

National Invest In Veterans Week® Appoints Kevin D. Shoun as Senior Advisor for Civic Leadership and Policy Development
Jacksonville, FL — December 29, 2024 — National Invest In Veterans Week® (NIVW), a global organization dedicated to supporting veteran-owned businesses and fostering economic empowerment, announces the appointment of Kevin D. Shoun as Senior Advisor for Civic Leadership and Policy Development. This addition strengthens NIVW’s mission of advocating for veterans, building opportunities for their businesses, and amplifying their voices on a global stage.
Kevin’s career as a decorated U.S. Army veteran, entrepreneur, civic leader, and mental health advocate makes him uniquely suited to spearhead NIVW’s advocacy and leadership initiatives. His appointment also marks a meaningful moment for Angel Shuford, Vice President and CFO of NIVW, who credits Kevin as the most influential leader of her military career.
“Kevin was my First Sergeant during my time in Army aviation,” Angel shared. “His leadership inspired me to pursue education and shaped my approach to leadership today. He taught me that great leaders elevate those around them, and I’m honored to now call him a colleague at NIVW.”
Kevin D. Shoun: A Legacy of Leadership and Service
Military Career: A Leader Who Inspires Leaders
Kevin served as a First Sergeant in U.S. Army aviation, where he led teams of over 100 personnel and managed resources exceeding $2 million. His ability to inspire, mentor, and guide those under his command became a hallmark of his leadership style.
His mentorship extended beyond professional duties, as Kevin consistently encouraged his team members to pursue their education and personal growth. Angel Shuford, now a senior leader herself, credits Kevin’s encouragement as the spark that motivated her to achieve more than she thought possible.
“Kevin’s belief in me changed the course of my life,” Angel reflected. “He taught us to be resilient, to seek solutions, and to believe in our ability to overcome any challenge. That’s the kind of leader he was—and continues to be.”
Advocating for Mental Health
Kevin’s impact reaches far beyond the military. He is a tireless advocate for mental health, especially in the military community. His powerful article, “Why is Suicide So Difficult to Talk About?”, published in Aviation Digest, won the 2019 Article of the Year Award.
In this deeply personal and compelling piece, Kevin shared his experiences with loss and grief, shedding light on the stigma surrounding mental health discussions in the military. The article resonated widely, prompting meaningful conversations and driving awareness about the importance of addressing mental health openly.
“Leadership doesn’t end at tactical success,” Kevin explained. “It includes fostering an environment where people feel safe discussing challenges, including mental health. Ignoring these conversations can cost lives, and we have to do better.”
Civic Leadership: Empowering Communities
Wiregrass Food Drive: A Lifeline for Southeast Alabama
In 2020, Kevin led the Wiregrass Area Food Drive, an initiative that provided essential resources to families in need across Southeast Alabama. Partnering with the Wiregrass Area Food Bank, Kevin mobilized the community with multiple donation drop-off points and an incentive raffle featuring a Yeti Cooler Summer Fun Prize Pack.
The campaign demonstrated Kevin’s ability to inspire action and create tangible impact, even during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The food drive wasn’t just about collecting items,” Kevin said. “It was about uniting the community to help each other. Leadership is about service, whether you’re wearing a uniform or not.”

“When I think about National Invest In Veterans Week®, I don’t just see an organization—I see a movement. I see an opportunity to honor the sacrifices veterans have made and to empower them to thrive in every aspect of life, especially as entrepreneurs and leaders. My mission is simple: ensure every veteran knows their worth and has access to the resources, networks, and tools they need to succeed.
As someone who’s served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, managing operations, mentoring others, and driving results in high-stakes environments, I know firsthand the discipline and determination veterans bring to the table. My journey—whether earning my FAA certifications, helping military families navigate real estate, or co-founding Tech From Vets—has taught me that veterans don’t just adapt; we excel. And at NIVW, we’re here to make sure the world sees that.
This isn’t just about one week a year; it’s about building a legacy of support and opportunity for those who’ve served. We’re creating platforms like FloridaVeterans.com, UnitedKingdomVeterans.com, and many more to extend our reach globally. We’re securing partnerships with leaders like Google, Comcast Business, and HarvardX to elevate our mission and expand our impact.
Veterans have the skills, the drive, and the resilience to build successful businesses and transform their communities. Jeff Shuford’s Retirement: Honoring a Legacy of Service and Advocacy
Jeff Shuford’s retirement marks the conclusion of an extraordinary career dedicated to service, innovation, and advocacy. As co-founder of National Invest In Veterans Week® (NIVW), Shuford transformed the landscape of veteran empowerment, creating an internationally recognized movement celebrated across 40 markets worldwide. From securing Congressional recognition to spearheading mental health initiatives like the Vets 22 app, his leadership saved lives, elevated veteran-owned businesses, and inspired countless others.
Now, Shuford has chosen a path rarely seen among public figures—complete and deliberate withdrawal from public life. Declining speaking engagements, appearances, or any formal commitments, he plans to embrace stillness and reflection. In his own words, “It’s time to rest, reflect, and simply live.”
Shuford’s legacy, deeply influenced by his family heritage, including his grandfather Jim Freeman of The Five Satins, endures through the movement he built and the lives he touched. While he retreats from the spotlight, his work continues to ripple across generations, proving that true leadership is not only about making an impact but also about knowing when to step back.
After years of groundbreaking leadership, unwavering dedication to veterans, and impactful innovations, Jeff Shuford has officially announced his retirement, marking the end of an illustrious chapter in his life. Known as the co-founder of National Invest In Veterans Week® (NIVW), Shuford has decided to step back entirely from public events and active engagements, committing instead to a quieter and well-earned retirement. His plans involve embracing simplicity and doing absolutely nothing—no speaking tours, no appearances, and no commitments. It’s a deliberate and mindful decision to embrace personal peace after years of selfless service.
A Trailblazer in Veteran Advocacy
Jeff Shuford’s journey is one defined by a deep sense of purpose and a mission to empower veterans. His leadership was instrumental in the creation and success of National Invest In Veterans Week®, an initiative that champions the voices of veterans and amplifies the contributions of veteran-owned businesses. Under his guidance, NIVW grew into an internationally recognized movement, celebrated in 19 U.S. markets and across 21 international communities, earning a place in the Congressional Record.
This monumental success was driven by Shuford’s strategic foresight, his ability to connect with people, and his unrelenting drive to create a better future for veterans. He tackled challenges ranging from veteran mental health issues to fostering economic opportunities for those transitioning to civilian life. His leadership not only inspired change but also created pathways for thousands of veterans to thrive.
A Quiet Transition
In December 2024, Shuford surprised many by announcing his decision to step down from all formal roles for NIVW. This decision was made not out of necessity, but as a personal choice to prioritize simplicity and mindfulness. For Shuford, retirement does not mean stepping into a different phase of public life—it means truly stepping away.
While his wife, Angel Shuford, and trusted colleague, LTC Rickey L. Pope, now lead NIVW into the future, Shuford has chosen to retreat from public engagements entirely. This break from the limelight reflects his philosophy that even leaders deserve the chance to rest, recharge, and redefine their lives on their terms.
Reflections on a Storied Legacy
Shuford’s career accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary. During his time with NIVW, he:
• Secured Congressional Recognition: National Invest In Veterans Week® became a nationally celebrated initiative, entered into the Congressional Record as a testament to its impact.
• Expanded Internationally: The movement spread across 40 global markets, including the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Germany, fostering a worldwide network of veteran advocates.
• Promoted Mental Health Awareness: Through programs like the Vets 22 app, Shuford made veteran mental health and suicide prevention central to his mission, saving countless lives.
• Empowered Veteran-Owned Businesses: NIVW provided tools, resources, and visibility for veterans to succeed in entrepreneurship, strengthening local economies and creating new opportunities.
Beyond his organizational achievements, Shuford exemplified integrity and selflessness. He famously declined a salary from NIVW, underscoring his belief that the initiative was about advocacy, not profit. His ethos—“This is a movement, not a business”—has become a rallying cry for all who continue his work.
Family Roots and Inspiration
Shuford’s commitment to excellence and service is deeply rooted in his family history. His grandfather, Jim Freeman, was a founding member of the legendary doo-wop group The Five Satins, best known for their timeless hit “In the Still of the Night.” Freeman’s artistic legacy of breaking boundaries and inspiring others left an indelible mark on Shuford, shaping his vision and values.
This sense of legacy guided Shuford throughout his career, as he strove to leave behind a movement that would stand the test of time—just as his grandfather’s music continues to inspire generations.
The Decision to Do Nothing
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of Shuford’s retirement is his decision to fully embrace rest. Unlike many leaders who remain active in advisory roles or embark on post-retirement speaking engagements, Shuford is intentionally stepping away from it all.
In his own words:
“I’ve spent years fighting for causes, creating movements, and driving change. Now, I want to experience the quiet moments—to enjoy the life I’ve worked so hard to build and just be present. It’s time to rest, reflect, and simply live.”
Shuford’s choice is a powerful reminder that stepping back is not a loss but a gift—an acknowledgment that life’s greatest rewards often come in stillness.
A Legacy That Endures
While Shuford may no longer be actively involved in NIVW, his legacy remains firmly embedded in the organization’s DNA. Under the capable leadership of Angel Shuford and LTC Rickey L. Pope, the initiative is set to continue its work, expanding into new markets and finding innovative ways to support veterans.
Even as Shuford retires to a life of quiet simplicity, the impact of his work will continue to ripple across generations. His legacy is one of resilience, innovation, and an unyielding commitment to service—a legacy that will inspire all who follow in his footsteps.
Conclusion
Jeff Shuford’s retirement is a celebration of a remarkable career and a life well-lived. His decision to step away entirely, to embrace a life of stillness and reflection, is as bold and inspiring as his career itself.
As Shuford moves into this new chapter, he leaves behind a legacy of empowerment, advocacy, and integrity. For those who have had the privilege of witnessing his work, his story serves as a powerful testament to the enduring impact of service, leadership, and the quiet strength of knowing when to let go.
