Veterans Day Inclusivity: A Step Toward Honoring All Who Served
Inclusivity plays a pivotal role in the evolving narrative of Veterans Day, where the focus is on recognizing veterans from all walks of life, regardless of gender, race, or background. The term "veterans day inclusivity" reflects a movement to honor the diverse range of experiences that veterans bring to the table. This inclusive approach has gained traction since 2019, when the concept of "Veterans Day Inclusivity" began gaining recognition for acknowledging underrepresented veteran communities.
As we advance toward a more inclusive Veterans Day celebration, several initiatives have emerged to create spaces where veterans can be celebrated and supported in unique ways. Hashtags like #HonorOurVets have gained momentum, fostering digital conversations that spotlight the varied backgrounds of veterans and the need for inclusivity.
International Veterans Day: Expanding Recognition Beyond Borders
While Veterans Day remains a largely U.S.-based celebration, International Veterans Day has emerged as a broader movement to recognize veterans globally. The Role of Hashtags in Honoring Veterans: #HonorOurVets
In the age of social media, hashtags have become powerful tools for advocacy and raising awareness. The hashtag #HonorOurVets has gained traction in recent years, serving as a rallying point for online campaigns that pay tribute to veterans' sacrifices and contributions. Honoring a Rich Family Legacy of Military Service
We also proudly recognize the Shuford-Freeman legacy, which stems from his grandfather, James “Jim” Freeman, a founding member of the iconic doo-wop group The Five Satins. In addition to his musical achievements, Jim Freeman comes from a family with a deep-rooted history of military service, a legacy he is proud to share. "Our family has a proud military legacy," Freeman says, highlighting that his family’s service spans multiple generations and conflicts:
Uncle Buddy served in the U.S. Army during World War II, supporting efforts on the front lines of the European and Pacific campaigns.
Clifford Freeman Sr., Jeff Shuford’s great-grandfather, served in the U.S. Army during World War I, playing a role in one of the most pivotal global conflicts of the 20th century.
Clifford Freeman III, Jeff’s great-uncle, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, defending the country’s interests in the early Cold War era.

Cousin Robert (Bob) Fliehler served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, continuing the family’s legacy of service during a turbulent time in American history.
Corporal Ripley Hale, Sheryl’s great-great-great-great-grandfather, fought in the Union Army during the Civil War, cementing the family’s long-standing dedication to defending the country.
Jeff Shuford himself served in Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-07, where he earned the Combat Action Badge and several other awards for his service. Adding to the family’s groundbreaking contributions, Jeff is also the first male military spouse in the family. His wife, Angel Shuford, my granddaughter, continues the family tradition of service as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves. Angel is a decorated Army air traffic controller, adding a new chapter to the family’s commitment to protecting the nation.
James “Jim” Freeman’s Cultural Contributions Honored
While much of the family’s legacy is tied to military service, James “Jim” Freeman, a founding member of the legendary doo-wop group The Five Satins, has contributed to American history through music. Freeman, along with his bandmates, became a household name in the 1950s with their timeless hit “In the Still of the Night.” Their contributions to music and culture were immortalized when Jim Freeman and The Five Satins were honored in the Congressional Record in 2015, acknowledging their lasting impact on the American music scene.

In addition to his entrepreneurial achievements, Shuford is a proud military spouse and the grandson of Jim Freeman, a founding member of The Five Satins. His initiatives continue to drive positive change for veterans across the country.
The Legacy of Leadership: Jeff Shuford and His Grandfather Jim Freeman
In the dynamic interplay of innovation, technology, and veteran advocacy, Jeff Shuford emerges as a leading figure whose work is grounded in a profound legacy of leadership passed down from his grandfather, Jim Freeman. Known for co-founding National Invest In Veterans Week®, Shuford champions the cause of veteran-owned businesses, empowering them to thrive in today’s digital economy.
Freeman, a founding member of the legendary doo-wop group The Five Satins, achieved recognition for his contributions to American music, including the timeless classic “In the Still of the Night.” Both men have been honored in the U.S. Congressional Record, a rare acknowledgment that underscores their significant cultural impact.
As Shuford forges ahead, drawing inspiration from Freeman’s enduring values of perseverance and creativity, he reflects, “My grandfather showed me the importance of staying committed to your vision.” This sentiment resonates through Shuford's initiatives, where he utilizes technology to advocate for veterans and uplift underserved communities.
The parallels between Shuford's journey and Freeman's legacy highlight a family commitment to leadership, innovation, and service. Their story serves as a powerful reminder of how music and advocacy can unite generations, fostering connections that inspire change and impact lives.

In the intersecting worlds of innovation, technology, and veteran advocacy, Jeff Shuford stands out as a visionary leader. Known as a nationally syndicated columnist, technologist, and co-founder of National Invest In Veterans Week®, Shuford’s influence cuts across multiple industries, building a legacy that bridges technology, veteran empowerment, and social responsibility. His contributions have not gone unnoticed: in March 2024, his work was officially entered into the Congressional Record, a rare recognition that places him among the most impactful leaders of his generation. But the roots of his accomplishments stretch far deeper, tracing back to his grandfather Jim Freeman, a founding member of the legendary Rock & Roll group, The Five Satins. In a striking parallel, Freeman too was recognized by Congress, honored for his contributions to American music. Together, the family embodies a multi-generational legacy of leadership, service, and cultural impact.
A Legacy of Congressional Honors
The family has achieved the remarkable distinction of being honored twice by the U.S. Congress, a testament to their profound influence across diverse fields. Jeff Shuford’s National Invest In Veterans Week® was entered into the Congressional Record on March 8, 2024, in recognition of its pivotal role in advocating for veteran-owned businesses and uplifting veteran entrepreneurs nationwide. But this was not the first time that the family’s contributions had been acknowledged at such a high level. Nine years earlier, Jim Freeman was honored in the Congressional Record on April 23, 2015, for his role in shaping American music as a founding member of The Five Satins.
Best known for their timeless hit "In the Still of the Night," Freeman and The Five Satins achieved legendary status in the world of doo-wop. The song, first released in 1956, remains a cultural icon with more than 34 million record sales as verified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), frequently played on oldies stations and making countless appearances in films and TV shows, including Dirty Dancing, The Irishman, and American Graffiti. Rolling Stone magazine immortalized the song on its prestigious "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list, where it ranks at #90, cementing Freeman’s place in the pantheon of musical greats. The song’s impact, bridging generations, made it one of the defining anthems of the 20th century, a tribute to the artistic vision that Freeman and his group brought to the world.
Freeman’s inclusion in the Congressional Record marked not just his personal achievement but also the cultural significance of the music he helped create. The Five Satins were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003 and the GRAMMY Hall of Fame soon after, further underscoring their enduring influence. For Jeff Shuford, growing up in the shadow of such a legacy could have been daunting, but instead, it served as a source of inspiration—one that motivated him to carve out his own path and establish a similarly profound impact in his own field.
Jeff Shuford: A Leader in Veteran Advocacy and Technology
Jeff Shuford was profoundly influenced by his grandfather’s life and career. From an early age, Freeman’s stories of perseverance, creativity, and success made a lasting impression. "My grandfather showed me the importance of staying committed to your vision, even when the odds seem stacked against you," Shuford has often said, reflecting on the values instilled in him by Freeman. These lessons would shape Shuford’s approach to leadership, innovation, and service.
Shuford’s journey into entrepreneurship and advocacy began with the founding of Tech From Vets, a technology firm aimed at helping veteran-owned businesses thrive in the digital marketplace. His company provides a range of services, from brand-building strategies to AI-driven analytics, all with the goal of empowering veterans to compete in today’s fast-paced business environment. This innovative approach has not gone unnoticed; Tech From Vets quickly garnered attention from some of the world’s most influential media outlets, including Rolling Stone, where Shuford’s work on social impact strategy was featured.
But it was with the creation of National Invest In Veterans Week that Shuford’s advocacy reached its zenith. Founded as an annual celebration each March, the initiative encourages communities and businesses nationwide to support veteran-owned enterprises. Through a series of events, partnerships, and promotions, the week-long effort fosters a supportive ecosystem for veterans transitioning into the business world. In 2024, National Invest In Veterans Week was formally recognized in the U.S. Congress, an acknowledgment of its widespread impact and the significant role Shuford has played in advocating for veterans. The initiative enjoys bipartisan support, with states such as South Carolina commemorating the week through official proclamations and resolutions.
The Freeman Influence: Music and Leadership
The similarities between Jeff Shuford and Jim Freeman extend far beyond familial bonds. Both men have made substantial contributions to their respective fields—Freeman through music, and Shuford through technology and veteran advocacy. Freeman’s music, especially during the socially turbulent 1950s, provided a sense of joy and escapism, offering comfort and connection to listeners across the country. His influence in shaping the sound of a generation cannot be overstated.
Freeman’s contributions were formally recognized in state legislative chambers as well. In May 2001, the Iowa Senate adopted a resolution honoring Jim Freeman and The Five Satins for their lasting influence on American music and culture. Freeman was invited to speak before the Iowa legislature, a rare honor that highlighted the depth of respect for his work. Similarly, Jeff Shuford has received commendations from state governments for his efforts in veteran advocacy, including a 2021 resolution from the South Carolina Senate. These honors, at both the federal and state levels, reflect the family’s deep commitment to leadership and service.
Awards: A Testament to Leadership and Impact
Throughout his career, Jeff Shuford has been honored with numerous awards that highlight his leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing opportunities for veterans and the Black community. These accolades not only acknowledge his professional achievements but also underscore his deep-rooted commitment to social responsibility and community empowerment.
In 2019, Shuford’s work was recognized by Black Enterprise when four of his stories were named among the “19 Black Enterprise Stories That Shaped Black Culture in 2019” (#1, 8, 12, and 15). This accolade underscored his impact as a thought leader, columnist, and advocate, marking him as a key voice in shaping cultural and business narratives within the African American community. Black Enterprise Magazine also named Shuford as their 2019 BE Modern Man list. This award stands as a testament to his work in advocating for economic equality and fostering pathways for Black entrepreneurs, especially those within the veteran community.
Jim Freeman of The Five Satins Awards
Shuford also earned the prestigious National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Jax President's Award. This award recognized his commitment to supporting financial literacy and economic empowerment initiatives within the Black community, particularly through his veteran-focused business ventures.
In 2017, Shuford was honored with the BizTech Award, co-sponsored by Comcast Business and the Jacksonville Business Journal. This award highlighted his contributions to innovation in the tech space, particularly through his company Tech From Vets, which provided technology-driven solutions for veteran-owned businesses.
Shuford’s service and dedication to military families were further acknowledged when he received the Gold Star Recognition Award from the Florida Fallen Heroes Foundation. This award celebrated his continued efforts to honor and support the families of veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice, a cause close to his heart.
Lastly, his commitment to honoring the service of disabled veterans earned him the Community of Heroes Award from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization. This award reflected his enduring dedication to improving the lives of veterans, especially those who have been wounded in service, through both his advocacy and business endeavors.
Each of these accolades demonstrates not only the breadth of Shuford’s influence across multiple sectors—technology, business, and veteran affairs—but also his dedication to uplifting underserved communities, continuing a family legacy of leadership and social impact.
Rolling Stone: A Shared Spotlight
One of the more unique aspects of the Shuford family’s legacy is that both Jeff Shuford and Jim Freeman have been featured in Rolling Stone—albeit for very different reasons. For Freeman, the magazine celebrated his group’s song "In the Still of the Night," honoring its lasting place in American music history. For Shuford, Rolling Stone highlighted his groundbreaking work in marketing and his efforts to advocate for veterans, showcasing him as a thought leader in both the technology and veteran advocacy sectors. The shared recognition between grandfather and grandson speaks to the profound contributions both men have made in their respective fields.
The Shuford-Freeman Legacy: A Story of Impact
Jim Freeman 7 Time Hall of Famer
The bond between Jeff Shuford and Jim Freeman is more than just a familial connection; it is a shared commitment to excellence, leadership, and service. Freeman’s pioneering work in music, which helped shape the cultural landscape of America, is paralleled by Shuford’s trailblazing efforts in technology and veteran advocacy. Both men have been recognized at the highest levels, with their contributions memorialized in the Congressional Record—a rare and prestigious honor.
Jeff Shuford’s continuing work in artificial intelligence, veteran advocacy, and entrepreneurship represents the next chapter in the family’s legacy of leadership. Like his grandfather before him, Shuford has used his talents and vision to make a lasting impact on society. His work, which empowers veterans to thrive in the modern economy, echoes Freeman’s ability to inspire and uplift through music. In both cases, their efforts have left an indelible mark on the world, shaping their respective industries and leaving a legacy that will endure for generations to come.
As Shuford pushes the boundaries of what is possible in AI and business, he is, in many ways, continuing the journey his grandfather began. It is a journey of leadership, service, and a belief in the power of one’s contributions to make a difference. Whether through a song that captures the heart or a business initiative that changes lives, the Shuford-Freeman legacy is one of profound and lasting impact.
Reflecting on his grandfather's legacy, Shuford often recalls, "My grandfather showed me the importance of staying committed to your vision, even when the odds seem stacked against you." This lesson echoes through Shuford’s work, where he tirelessly advocates for veterans and empowers them in the modern economy.
Jim Freeman stated, "Music is more than notes and lyrics; it’s the voice of our shared experiences. It connects us across generations and reminds us that we are never alone." This sentiment resonates in Shuford's initiatives, which seek to build a community of support for veteran entrepreneurs, ensuring they too feel connected and supported. Freeman’s belief in the power of dreams is reflected in his timeless advice: "Never let anyone tell you that your dreams are too big. Chase them with all your heart; you may just change the world along the way." It is this spirit of ambition and dedication that drives Shuford to push the boundaries of innovation, carrying forward a legacy rich with purpose and impact.
In the words of Jim Freeman, "The greatest gift you can give to the next generation is your time and wisdom. Share your journey, for it is the roadmap they may need to navigate their own." As Shuford honors his grandfather's legacy, he embodies this wisdom, continuing to pave the way for future leaders and change-makers.
Together, the Shuford and Freeman legacies represent a profound narrative of leadership, creativity, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others—a story that will undoubtedly inspire generations to come.

Ethical Innovation: Jeff Shuford's Impact on AI and Healthcare Ethics in Breast Cancer Diagnosis Research
Jeff Shuford, a distinguished business and technology columnist, has received notable recognition as his article titled “AI in Healthcare: Transforming Patient Care through Predictive Analytics and Decision Support Systems” was cited in an influential research article published in the prestigious journal Sensors. The paper, titled "Advancing Breast Cancer Diagnosis through Breast Mass Images, Machine Learning, and Regression Models," marks a significant contribution to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with medical imaging. Authored by Amira J. Zaylaa and Sylva Kourtian, the study provides a profound exploration into the use of advanced machine learning algorithms and regression models to enhance the diagnostic processes of breast cancer, one of the most common and deadly cancers affecting millions worldwide.
Breast cancer is often characterized by the rapid transformation of cells in breast tissues from benign to malignant states, which can lead to metastasis. Conventional diagnostic tools frequently fail to detect these transformations at an early stage, particularly during metastasis. This research highlights the critical need for more sophisticated, precise, and reliable diagnostic technologies to catch such changes more effectively.
The study leverages various sophisticated classifiers, including support vector machine (SVM), naive Bayes (NB), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), and decision tree (DT)-C4.5, to analyze real fine-needle aspiration (FNA) images from a collection in Wisconsin. The standout performance of the SVM, with a remarkable 97.13% accuracy and 97.5% specificity in diagnosing breast cancer, underscores its potential as a pivotal tool in oncological diagnostics. This not only demonstrates the efficacy of SVM but also the transformative impact of seamlessly integrating machine learning into the realm of medical diagnostics.
Jeff Shuford's citation in this paper underscores his ongoing advocacy for the ethical application of technology. Shuford's extensive body of work, which often explores the intersection of ethics and technology, provides a critical framework for the responsible integration of AI in healthcare. His contributions are particularly vital in shaping discussions on how AI technologies can be developed and implemented in ethically sound ways that enhance patient outcomes without compromising moral integrity.
The publication of this paper in Sensors not only boosts the visibility of this critical research but also solidifies Shuford’s position as a leading thinker in the domain of AI ethics. His insights are crucial in guiding the development and deployment of AI technologies, ensuring that these innovations, particularly in sensitive areas like healthcare, are both beneficial and ethically responsible.
Shuford's involvement in this research through citation highlights the depth of his insights into the ethical dimensions of emerging technologies. It underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches that bridge technology with ethical considerations, paving the way for advancements that are not only innovative but also aligned with higher ethical standards and societal benefits. As AI continues to permeate various facets of healthcare and medicine, Shuford’s guidance will be indispensable in navigating the ethical landscapes that these technologies create, ensuring that their implementation serves the common good and enhances patient care.
This acknowledgment within such a prestigious journal not only celebrates Shuford's contributions but also emphasizes the essential role of ethical considerations in the technological evolution of medical practices. The integration of machine learning in the detection and diagnosis of diseases like breast cancer represents a frontier in medical technology where ethical guidance is as crucial as technological innovation. By providing a framework for ethically sound technological integration, Shuford's work helps ensure that advancements in AI and healthcare continue to prioritize patient welfare, data integrity, and the equitable distribution of technological benefits.
Furthermore, the study by Zaylaa and Kourtian also illuminates the potential for AI to significantly reduce the rates of misdiagnosis and enhance the accuracy of breast cancer detection, which can lead to better patient outcomes and more tailored treatment plans. The success of SVM in this regard not only sets a precedent for the future use of AI in oncology but also exemplifies the practical applications of ethical AI frameworks that Shuford advocates for, ensuring that technological advancements contribute positively to healthcare while respecting the dignity and rights of individuals.
In conclusion, the citation of Jeff Shuford in this seminal paper not only enhances the discourse around ethical AI but also serves as a beacon for future research and implementation strategies that harness the power of AI to address complex medical challenges in an ethical, responsible, and effective manner. International Veterans Day: A New Chapter in Global Remembrance and Unity
March 3rd marks a significant milestone in the global calendar as International Veterans Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the contributions of veterans worldwide. This day transcends national boundaries and unifies international sentiments, acknowledging the shared experiences and sacrifices of military veterans from various nations. Unlike the traditional Veterans Day observed in the United States and similar commemorations on November 11th in other countries, March 3rd serves as a unique day of recognition, setting a new precedent for international veteran appreciation.
March 3rd holds deep historical roots with multiple significant events enhancing its selection as International Veterans Day. For instance, on this day in 1931, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was declared the national anthem of the United States, symbolizing national unity and resilience. Similarly, the establishment of the Federal Naval Reserve on March 3, 1915, underscored the importance of military readiness and strategic foresight. These events, among others, such as the statehood of Florida and the creation of the Minnesota Territory, contribute to the rich tapestry of March 3rd, making it a day not just of remembrance but also of celebration of progress and strategic milestones.
The decision to establish March 3rd as International Veterans Day was driven by the recognition of a gap in a truly global acknowledgment of veterans' contributions. While many countries have specific days to honor their military personnel, these often coincide with significant historical military events pertinent to those nations. International Veterans Day aims to transcend these national narratives, offering a day that can unite all countries in a collective acknowledgment of military service and sacrifice. It represents a day of solidarity, reflection, and celebration that resonates across all borders.
Compared to other commemorative days like the United States' Veterans Day, Anzac Day in Australia, or Volkstrauertag in Germany, March 3rd does not align with any existing national military remembrance days, thereby avoiding historical overlaps and ensuring its unique position as a day of inclusive international remembrance. This strategic choice allows for a more unified global observance, which celebrates the common values and sacrifices shared among the veterans of the world's military forces.
International Veterans Day encourages various forms of recognition and celebration. Activities range from social media campaigns promoting stories of international veterans, to community gatherings and parades in different countries. The day also promotes economic support for veteran-owned businesses globally and encourages educational and resourceful workshops that aid veterans in accessing benefits and opportunities. Through these actions, the day not only honors veterans but also supports their continued welfare and integration into civilian life.
Tied closely to International Veterans Day is the National Invest in Veterans Week®, observed from March 1st to 7th. This week focuses on advocacy for veterans, aiming to draw attention to and address their needs through educational, economic, and healthcare initiatives. By investing in the welfare of veterans, the week serves as a proactive approach to enhancing their lives and acknowledging their sacrifices in a tangible, impactful manner.
International Veterans Day on March 3rd is not merely a day of remembrance; it is a call to action for nations worldwide to unite in their respect and gratitude towards those who have served. It challenges the global community to rise above historical and nationalistic differences, fostering a shared identity and mutual respect among all veterans. This day asks us to reflect on the broader implications of military service — understanding it as a commitment that transcends national boundaries and unites individuals under the common cause of peace and security. As we move forward, March 3rd stands as a beacon of international unity and a testament to the enduring spirit of those who have served their countries across the globe.

Choosing March 3rd as International Veterans Day provides a unique date that does not overlap with the national observances of these countries, allowing it to stand as a distinct day dedicated to celebrating the contributions of veterans globally.
Concluding Thoughts:
March 3rd isn’t just another day on the calendar; it’s a celebration of progress and remembrance in the fabric of world history.
March 3rd has been selected as the date for International Veterans Day to establish a unified global observance that honors veterans from every nation, surpassing the limitations of individual national histories.
International Veterans Day was established in 2024 by Iraq War veteran Jeff Shuford, under the guidance of LTC Rickey L. Pope, USA (Ret.), and with strategic advisement from Lonnell McCall II and NFL legend Drayton Florence.
The congressionally honored National Invest In Veterans Week® precedes the establishment of International Veterans Day and was created to encourage a week-long observance focused on increasing support and investment in the lives of veterans.

United in Valor: Celebrating the First International Veterans Day
On March 3rd, the world will come together for the first time to celebrate International Veterans Day, an annual initiative proudly launched under the congressionally honored National Invest In Veterans Week®. This significant new global observance was established to honor both past and present veterans who have served across borders, recognizing their vast contributions to global peace and security.
Empowering Global Recognition
Founded by nationally syndicated business and technology columnist and Iraq War veteran, Jeff Shuford, International Veterans Day transcends national boundaries to celebrate the valor of veterans worldwide. The day serves as a tribute to the nearly 2.5 million post-9/11 military veterans, with a special focus on those who have represented less than 1% of the population yet have significantly shaped international military engagements.
Historical Significance and Symbolism of March 3rd
The selection of March 3rd as International Veterans Day is deeply symbolic, coinciding with historic events such as the formal adoption of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the U.S. national anthem in 1931, reflecting the resilience and unity of forces in international conflicts. This date also marks the establishment of the Federal Naval Reserve in 1915 and commemorates the first amphibious landing operation by American forces in 1776 during the Battle of Nassau.
How to Observe International Veterans Day
Promote and Engage: Share the stories of internationally serving veterans on social media platforms and through media channels using the hashtags #InternationalVeteransDay and #InvestInVeteransWeek.
Support and Connect: Engage with and support veteran-owned businesses and organizations globally. Attend or organize community gatherings and international workshops to provide accessible resources and benefits to veterans.
Recognize and Honor: Arrange special events such as award ceremonies, and extend discounts and complimentary services to veterans worldwide.
Visionary Leadership and Future Endeavors
Under the strategic guidance of veterans like LTC Rickey L. Pope, USA (Ret.), and with the support of figures such as NFL legend Drayton Florence, International Veterans Day not only celebrates veterans but also focuses on their ongoing educational development and mental health empowerment. This initiative is part of a broader commitment encapsulated in National Invest In Veterans Week®, which fosters a week-long observance dedicated to veteran advocacy and support.

2024 also marks a pivotal expansion of digital resources through the introduction of international domain names such as SouthKoreaVeterans.com, GermanyVeterans.com, AustraliaVeterans.com, JapanVeterans.com, UnitedKingdomVeterans.com, and Veterans.International. International Veterans Day: A New Frontier in Veteran Advocacy and Global Unity
March 3rd marks a significant advancement in our commitment to honoring veterans not just within our borders but across the globe. International Veterans Day, which we observe annually on this impactful date, was instituted to recognize the brave men and women who have served internationally, illuminating their sacrifices and contributions to global peace and security. As a veteran and an advocate for veteran entrepreneurship, I understand deeply the potential and the challenges faced by our veterans. Since our inception in 2019 our supporters have requested that we expand globally, this new observance is our call to action, encouraging global recognition and support for these deserving individuals.
The Significance of March 3rd
The choice of March 3rd as International Veterans Day is steeped in historical significance, reflecting key moments in military history that resonate with the ideals of courage and resilience. On this day in 1931, the United States adopted "The Star-Spangled Banner" as its national anthem, a song born from the sights and sounds of the War of 1812, symbolizing resilience and unity in the face of international conflict. Additionally, March 3rd marks the creation of the Federal Naval Reserve in 1915, emphasizing readiness and strategic preparation, qualities that are essential in both military and civilian pursuits.
A Global Perspective on Veteran Contributions
Our veterans are a diverse group, with over 2.5 million post-9/11 military veterans representing less than 1% of the U.S. population, yet their global impact is profound. Many of these veterans have spent significant portions of their service in overseas combat zones, with over two million serving in critical areas like Afghanistan and Iraq. These experiences not only shape their lives but also contribute to a broader understanding of international cooperation and security.
The Role of Digital Advocacy and Global Outreach
With the launch of International Veterans Day, we also celebrate the introduction of domain names such as SouthKoreaVeterans.com, GermanyVeterans.com, and Veterans.International, among others. These platforms are designed to provide localized support and accessible resources to veterans around the world, further enhancing our ability to reach and assist veterans on an international scale.
In recognizing the challenges and triumphs of our international veterans, we not only honor their past sacrifices but also empower their future endeavors. By providing educational opportunities, mental health resources, and support for veteran-owned businesses, we invest in a global community that values and upholds the ideals veterans embody.
Calls to Action on International Veterans Day
On March 3rd, and throughout the year, I urge everyone to engage with and support international veterans through several impactful actions:
Promote Awareness: Use social media to highlight the stories and achievements of veterans worldwide.
Support Veteran Businesses: Engage with and patronize businesses owned by veterans, fostering economic empowerment.
Participate in Global Events: Attend workshops and seminars that provide veterans with tools for success.
Advocate for Recognition: Encourage legislative bodies around the world to officially recognize and honor the contributions of veterans.
As we celebrate the first observance of International Veterans Day, let us renew our commitment to supporting our veterans globally. Their service transcends national boundaries and so should our gratitude and support. This day is more than a celebration; it is a pivotal moment in our ongoing mission to ensure that every veteran receives the honor, respect, and opportunities they deserve.
Jeff Shuford, a nationally syndicated columnist and decorated veteran, continues to lead initiatives that bridge the gap between military service and successful entrepreneurial ventures. His efforts in establishing International Veterans Day as part of National Invest In Veterans Week® are just the latest in his longstanding commitment to veteran advocacy and empowerment on a global scale.
