Forging Fe-Male Leadership: A Deep Dive Into FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠

As a veteran, I see myself in Fe (iron)—strong, resilient, and unwavering under pressure. But true leadership requires adaptability and the capacity to bear great responsibility, symbolized by **Pb (lead)**. This duality inspired the creation of FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠, initiatives empowering female veterans to transition from strength to transformative leadership.

FeMil℠ provides the foundation: mentorship, resources, and funding education for aspiring entrepreneurs. FeMil Lead℠ refines that strength, offering advanced training and tools to scale businesses and inspire growth. Together, they form a roadmap for female veterans to build legacies—not just businesses—leading with resilience, adaptability, and purpose.

From the desk of Angel Shuford, VP/CFO

As female veterans transition from military service to the world of business, their journey is marked by both opportunity and challenge. While their time in uniform has instilled discipline, resilience, and leadership, the entrepreneurial landscape often presents barriers such as access to capital, mentorship, and structural support. Recognizing this unique intersection of strength and potential, FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠ were created to empower female veterans as they navigate their entrepreneurial journeys.

In this comprehensive exploration, we’ll unpack the mission, vision, and transformative impact of these initiatives, along with the broader significance of fostering female leadership in the veteran entrepreneurial space.

The Dual Symbolism of Fe and Pb: A Foundation for Empowerment

Fe (Iron): Strength and Resilience

Iron, represented as Fe in the periodic table, is a metal known for its unyielding strength and ability to withstand immense pressure. For female veterans, iron symbolizes the foundational qualities they bring to business:

  • Resilience: Overcoming adversity and adapting to new challenges.

  • Discipline: A core value instilled through military service.

  • Strength: The ability to endure and thrive in demanding environments.

FeMil℠ embodies this symbolism by building a community of women who channel their inner "iron" to lay the groundwork for entrepreneurial success.

Pb (Lead): Adaptability and Leadership

Lead, represented as Pb, offers a complementary symbolism. Unlike iron, lead is malleable, capable of being shaped and adapted to meet diverse challenges. It also bears significant weight, reflecting the responsibilities of leadership. FeMil Lead℠ equips female veterans to:

  • Evolve their resilience into transformative leadership.

  • Adapt to changing business landscapes.

  • Carry the weight of decision-making with confidence and clarity.

Together, Fe and Pb tell a story of empowerment. They capture the journey of female veteran entrepreneurs as they move from foundational strength to dynamic leadership.

The Challenges Female Veterans Face in Business

1. Access to Capital

Studies show that over 67% of veteran entrepreneurs cite access to funding as their primary challenge. Female veterans face additional hurdles, including systemic biases and inequities in the financial system, making it harder to secure loans or venture capital.

2. Lack of Mentorship and Networking Opportunities

While veterans often excel in leadership, they frequently lack access to structured mentorship programs and entrepreneurial networks. According to the 2018 Jacksonville Vetrepreneur Summit, only 44% of veterans reported having sustainable mentorship, highlighting a critical gap.

3. Scaling and Sustaining Businesses

Although 70% of surveyed female veterans expressed interest in starting a business, many struggle to scale and sustain their ventures due to limited resources, guidance, and government support.

This proposal integrates data-driven insights from the 2017 and 2018 Jacksonville Vetrepreneur Summit surveys, focusing on providing access to capital, enhancing networking opportunities, and fostering economic equity.

Executive Summary

The surveys conducted by National Invest in Veterans Week®, in partnership with the City of Jacksonville, Florida, highlight key challenges faced by veteran entrepreneurs: a lack of access to capital and a strong desire for networking opportunities. National Invest In Veterans Week Bestows Honorary Title on Jeff Shuford: A Legacy of Service and Symbolic Leadership

National Invest In Veterans Week® is proud to announce that Jeff Shuford has been named Honorary Ambassador of Veterans Affairs, a purely ceremonial title recognizing his remarkable contributions to veteran advocacy, entrepreneurship, and community empowerment. This symbolic role pays tribute to Jeff’s extraordinary impact while honoring his legacy as a veteran and thought leader in ways that are both meaningful and entirely respectful of his personal circumstances.

A Celebration of Leadership and Impact

Jeff Shuford has built a career that bridges innovation, advocacy, and empowerment, particularly for veterans. As a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he has firsthand knowledge of the challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life. This experience inspired him to co-found National Invest In Veterans Week®, an initiative dedicated to promoting veteran-owned businesses, highlighting their invaluable contributions to the economy, and fostering a greater understanding of veterans’ vital roles in society.

His leadership has been transformative, expanding the reach of National Invest In Veterans Week to 19 U.S. markets and 21 international markets, amplifying the voices of veteran entrepreneurs across the globe. By championing veteran-led businesses, Jeff has not only strengthened communities but also helped redefine how society views veterans—not just as those who served but as leaders, innovators, and builders of the future.

The Honorary Ambassador Title: A Role of Respect, Not Responsibility

The title of Honorary Ambassador of Veterans Affairs is a ceremonial designation that acknowledges Jeff Shuford’s enduring contributions without assigning him any active duties, responsibilities, or obligations. National Invest In Veterans Week carefully designed this honor to ensure that it reflects the spirit of recognition and respect, without imposing any expectations that could be misconstrued as formal employment, work, or volunteerism.

Jeff’s appointment is purely symbolic, crafted to honor his influence and celebrate his legacy in a way that aligns with his unique circumstances and rights. The title is not tied to any operational role or involvement in decision-making, nor does it require Jeff to perform any tasks, represent the organization in official capacities, or take part in its day-to-day activities.

This thoughtful approach ensures that the recognition is meaningful while maintaining the utmost respect for Jeff’s individual circumstances and the broader framework of veteran-related benefits and protections.

A Legacy Rooted in Service

Jeff Shuford’s life has been defined by service—both in the military and beyond. During his time in uniform, Jeff distinguished himself as a soldier in Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning a Combat Action Badge and multiple commendations for his dedication and courage. These experiences shaped his deep commitment to advocating for veterans, particularly in areas such as entrepreneurship, mental health, and community reintegration.

Following his military service, Jeff launched Tech From Vets, a veteran-led technology company that merges the expertise of military and NFL veterans to deliver cutting-edge digital solutions. One of the company’s most notable projects, the Vets 22 app, directly addresses veteran suicide by providing access to mental health resources and peer support networks. This groundbreaking work has saved lives and exemplifies Jeff’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by veterans in innovative and impactful ways.

National Invest In Veterans Week: A Movement, Not a Job

Jeff’s role as the co-founder of National Invest In Veterans Week is another extension of his passion for supporting veterans. However, it is crucial to emphasize that National Invest In Veterans Week is not a formal organization or employer, but rather a grassroots movement that Jeff launched out of a desire to make a difference. The initiative operates as a self-funded platform designed to uplift veteran entrepreneurs and amplify their voices. Jeff’s involvement has always been as a visionary leader and advocate, not as an employee, executive, or worker.

The Honorary Ambassador title further reflects this ethos. It is a symbolic acknowledgment of Jeff’s enduring influence and leadership within the veteran community, not a job or an official position. This ensures that the honor remains entirely consistent with Jeff’s personal circumstances, respecting his rights and the protections afforded to him as a veteran.

A Role Designed for Recognition, Not Work

The honorary title given to Jeff Shuford was carefully crafted to ensure that it aligns with the principles of respect, recognition, and compliance. The term “Honorary Ambassador” was deliberately chosen to convey the ceremonial nature of the role. The title serves as a marker of Jeff’s legacy and his symbolic connection to National Invest In Veterans Week, without implying any active engagement, work-related responsibilities, or formal obligations.

Key aspects of the honorary title include:

  1. No Work-Related Responsibilities: Jeff is not expected to perform any tasks, attend meetings, or engage in any operational aspects of National Invest In Veterans Week. His role is purely symbolic and celebratory.

  2. No Compensation: The title is not tied to any financial remuneration or economic benefit, reinforcing its honorary nature.

  3. No Decision-Making Authority: Jeff does not participate in organizational decision-making, policy formulation, or strategic planning for National Invest In Veterans Week.

  4. Symbolic Leadership: The role exists solely to recognize Jeff’s contributions and to inspire others through his story and legacy.
